The Perfect Cosmo

I’ll keep this one short, but strong.

The perfect cosmopolitan should be a cloudy flamingo-pink color, not clear and hot pink or, worse yet, red. It should also not come from a cocktail-mix bottle. All a cosmo is, alcohol aside, is cranberry juice and some lemon or lime juice. I think cosmo mixes are the biggest racket in the grocery store.

Anyway, full disclosure: the International Bartenders’ Association would disagree with me here, buy only slightly–my proportions are slightly off. Reason being that, while a cosmo should be smooth I like to lessen the tartness by spiking it with extra sharpness by way of extra lime juice, acerbic and sour.

The history of these are disputed so rather than speculating lets just get our drink on, k?

  1. Ready? This is a complicated one?
  2. Fill a martini glass with ice and set aside to chill it.
  3. Pour everything into a cocktail shaker and then pour in the ice from the glass.
  4. Shake the whole thing until the shaker is chilled--about 15 shakes.
  5. Strain into the chilled glass and enjoy.

  1. Sounds perfect! Cosmo is my absolute favourite cocktail! I remember a girls night out where me and a couple of friends pooled our money and made it a mission to find the perfect cosmo. After too many bad cosmos we finally found a great one, but were far too drunk to enjoy it 🙂

    1. Ha ha! I’ve been there! When I worked in Ann Arbor, MI a friend and I had a similar mission to find a good margarita. Believe it or not, even in a town with tons of bars and artisnal cocktails, it was difficult. Thanks for the comment–glad you liked it.
