Seville Orange Margarita

Seville Orange Margarita

After a brief hiatus I’m back and I brought a pretty good recipe with me.   It’s no secret that I love National Margarita Day—just take a look back—but I’ve always thought it was a little weird that it was in the middle of winter. I rationalize it that it’s because what we crave in the dead of subzero temps we crave that warm summer feeling, and what better way to get that than from a margarita? I mean, it makes sense; an ice-cold margarita, both exotically warming and ... continue reading...

Thanksgiving Trifle

Thanksgiving Trifle

Where do I even begin with this? Alright, Pumpkin Spice People—I've got another recipe to add to your arsenal of ways to get your pumpkin spice fix (please refer to exhibit P here). This one is for you (and at least 8 - 9 others). I love pumpkin pie, don't get me wrong, but I it can get a little ho-hum. Even a really good homemade pumpkin pie—I'm going to be that person and say that, no, you're wrong, that Big Box Store pumpkin pie is not the best around—can leave you with empty, ... continue reading...

Butternut Squash with Ras El Hanout

Butternut Squash with Ras El Hanout

No secret—I'm shamelessly addicted to The Great British Bake Off (aka The Great British Baking Show).   One season Kimberley Wilson made this fabulous phyllo pie, dough tinted with turmeric, and filled with bacon, chicken thighs, and butternut squash. That in and of itself may sound like enough but she then instructs to add in an incredibly aromatic spice mix called ras el hanout. I'm hopelessly obsessed with this recipe. She makes hers as a large ring in a savarin ... continue reading...

Bacon-Apple Crumble

Bacon-Apple Crumble

Everyone loves apple crumble.   Everyone loves bacon.   This was a no-brainer. Growing up my mom used to make an apple crumble that was incredible. I wish I knew the recipe that she used (I suspect it was from an old Betty Crocker cook book we had, though it may have been on one of the recipe cards she kept in her grandmothers old wooden recipe card box... I wonder what happened to that). Nevertheless, it was something that signified fall for me and was the ultimate ... continue reading...

The Killer Clown (and its last meal)

The Killer Clown (and its last meal)

Are clowns the new zombie? I kind of hope so. I'm more sick of zombies now than I was of vampires a few years back. Thanks to some recent films and TV shows clowns are every where. And, hey, remember a few years ago when creepy clowns kept popping up all over the place? Clowns are scary. After the new "It" movie came out a little while back there was an influx of articles telling us just why we don't like clowns—their human faces with accentuated and contoured features make our brains ... continue reading...

The Detective

The Detective

It was a sleepy bedroom community just outside the city limits. Everyone knew everyone else. It was the sort of place where you never had to lock your doors, or worry about your children playing outside. It was a town where nothing bad ever happened. That is, until a series of gruesome incidences shook the town to its very core. Can the town recover from such violent offenses? Why are so many people in the town remaining silent? Can law enforcement catch a killer before it's too late? This... is ... continue reading...
